Princess Diana

Diana was born as the youngest daughter of the late Earl Spencer and Hon. Mrs. Shand-Kydd. She had two elder sisters Jane and Sarah and one younger brother Charles.

Diana’s childhood was hacked with the separation of her parents when she was barely six. She was sent to the West Health Public School a boarding school in Kent. She excelled in sport, especially swimming but her academic records were poor.

Diana’s friendship with Prince Charles started when she was an assistant in a kindergarten school in Kent. It grew and rumors of their friendship started to bloom. Though the palace tried their best to suppress such assumptions of the public, on February 24, 1981 the couple officially announced their engagement to the world.

The Wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana attracted millions of television viewers and over 600,000 viewers who lined the streets to watch the spectacular event. Princess Diana, barely 20 years then, was the first English woman in 300 years to marry an heir to the throne. A moment of pride and honor to Diana and her parents!

Princess Diana soon gained the love and affection of the royal household with her spontaneity and charm. She loved to be among the ordinary people and visited schools, hospitals etc. and made herself like an ordinary person though she could not be ordinary any more.

In June 1982 Princess Diana gave birth to Prince William and in 1984 Prince Henry was born. Unlike the royal children who had private teachers, Diana wanted her sons be sent to school to study with the other children and to enjoy fun and laughter with other children. Prince William became the first heir to go to kindergarten school.

Princess Diana loved to lend support to AIDS victims. Her endless meetings and charity shows showed her in the limelight among the less privileged and the disadvantaged. She once shook hands with a leper to prove that the disease is not contagious as the myth held.

However, the fairytale marriage was not be for long, by 1987 things went wrong between the couple. Diana noticed that her husband was having an extra marital affair with an earlier friend Camilla Parker-Bowles and it was confirmed at a BBC program by Prince Charles.

Shortly after the couple’s return from Korea in December 1992, news of their divorce spread. Diana’s saddest day in her life came on 28th August 1996 when she was divorced.

However, Diana continued her charity work often visiting public places of interest along with her two sons who she adored. She did not give up her love for charity and auctioned 79 ballroom gowns and dresses that fetched 3.5 million pounds for charity.

Diana’s friendship with Dodi Fayed the son of a millionaire caught much attention and their pictures were spread throughout the world’s magazines and newspapers. Diana would never have known that her end was near.

Dodi Fayed and Diana returned to the Ritz hotel in Paris after a happy holiday in Sardinia on August 30th. They were literally chased by the media on motorbikes when they left the Ritz in a limousine. The limousine started to gain speed but unfortunately it crashed into the eleventh pillar of Paris’ underpass which left Diana, Dodi Fayed and the driver dead and one body guard seriously injured.

August 31, 1997 was a dreadful day when the news of Diana’s death was heard throughout the world. It brought grief and sorrow to all her loved ones and great shock and agony to those who loved her for her charitable heart. Diana will always be remembered in their hearts with great reverence and respect and to the public a fascinating and charming lady.
